Senior Communications Associate (Editorial)

Position Description:
The Senior Communications Associate has editorial responsibility for the production of PolicyLink print materials. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the quality of PolicyLink materials, works with the Design and Production Manager to ensure on time delivery, and is the managing editor for Equitable Development Updates, the organization’s monthly electronic newsletter. To achieve these goals, the incumbent edits, rewrites as necessary, copyedits, and proofreads manuscripts or supervises other staff or freelancers in carrying out these functions. The Senior Communications Associate also works closely with Associate Directors responsible for delivering content to the PolicyLink website. This position is based in New York and reports to the Vice President for Communications.
PolicyLink annually produces forty to fifty documents of varying lengths, including reports, presentations, fliers, and brochures. Research documents may include maps, tables, charts, and other illustrative and reference materials requiring special attention during the editorial process.
Audiences for these materials include foundation executives, advocacy organizations, the public, and legislators. Most are written by PolicyLink program staff based in the PolicyLink headquarters in Oakland, California. As an organization focused on policy as a tool for enhancing opportunity for people of color and residents of low-income communities, PolicyLink faces the challenges associated with writing clearly without oversimplifying or losing the nuance associated with the critical issues the work describes. The successful candidate for this position will be sensitive to these challenges while holding PolicyLink printed materials to the highest editorial standards.
The Senior Communications Associate must be an excellent writer and editor whose editorial skills with experience gained from such venues as book or magazine publishing or in the publications department of a medium to large size nonprofit organization. The position holder should be adept at writing, editing, copyediting, and proofreading, and in supervising others in fulfilling these tasks, and have experience editing copy for the web. The incumbent must be skilled in working with authors and tactful in resolving editorial differences as well as organized, thorough, and attentive to details.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in policy issues and the advocacy process, possess intellectual curiosity, and be a creative thinker open to exploring innovative approaches to presenting ideas and concepts. The position involves travel to the Oakland office at least twice a year.

Essential Responsibilities:
The Web Producer works with the Communications team and shares the responsibility for the online presentation of The Healthy Eating Active Living Convergence Partnership, a collaboration of funders who have, since 2006, combined resources and expertise to promote a multifield, equity-focused approach to creating environments that support healthy eating and active living. The partnership steering committee includes representatives of The California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, Nemours, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Institute serve as technical advisors on the committee. PolicyLink, the national research and action institute that works to advance economic and social equity, is the partnership program director.
This position is based in New York and reports to the Senior Online Communications Associate and the Associate Director of Communications.
The Web Producer will primarily assist in conceptualizing designs around the partnership and/or bringing existing compositions into web-ready elements and implementing them into the (Kintera) WCMS platform to create a flexible, standards-compliant web experience. The right candidate will have experience creating Kintera Sphere forms, working with its segmentation, actions, database, and communications functionality.

Essential Responsibilities:
The Online Communications Assistant is a member of the Communications team and shares the responsibility for the online presentation of PolicyLink, its partners, and its issues. This position is based in New York and reports to the Senior Online Communications Associate.
The Online Communications Assistant works collaboratively with communications and program staff in all the PolicyLink offices to use the Internet to advance strategies and tools to achieve economic and social equity. By providing online information about issues and ideas, disseminated via the PolicyLink website, email newsletters and blasts, streaming video, audio of speeches, blogs, and podcasts, the incumbent supports the organization's mission of Lifting Up What Works and demonstrating the power of policy to change lives and circumstances.
This position will include participating in project teams, assisting in implementation and maintenance of Internet activities, and the responsibility for taking conceptual designs into flexible, standards-compliant web pages.

Essential Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be a key member of the leadership team of the PolicyLink Center for Health and Place. They will work with executive and other senior level colleagues to support the Convergence Partnership--a collaboration of 6 funders seeking to build a movement for healthy people and healthy places. Core components will include reaching out to funders, advocates and practitioners involved in a variety of multi-issue efforts including transportation, the built environment, access to healthy foods, and physical activity. They will identify needs and opportunities for collaboration and capacity building, and will work to develop a national network of funders, advocates, and practitioners. As appropriate, the Associate Director will supervise staff and work collaboratively with project partners. They will build relationships with funders, practitioners, advocates, and other stakeholders. As needed, the Associate Director will make presentations and develop written reports. This position requires some travel.
